Woodingdean is a suburb on the eastern side of Brighton. It developed after the Great War when building by developers on sheep grazing land, in the northern  tip of Rottingdean parish, was given the go-ahead. The deepest hand-dug well, at 392m deep, is claimed to be located on the site of the private Nuffield Hospital.

You need sturdy legs to stroll around the wider area of Woodingdean but there's nothing more pleasant than going for a saunter, perhaps to buy a newspaper, and meeting and greeting the friendly residents en route in the neighbourhood. These streets include Falmer Road, Bexhill Road, Crescent Drive South, The Ridgeway, Downs Valley Road, and Warren Road.

Woodingdean's name is derived from a farm to the south of where the modern development is located. This build set-up has some interesting claims to fame with links to the former Emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie and, unrelated, the comedian Max Miller. The former workhouse school, now a private hospital known as The Nuffield, in Warren Road, is one of the earliest known buildings. It allegedly contains the deepest well dug-by-hand in the world, dating from 1858 to 1862.
