About Bolney
Bolney village in Mid Sussex, near Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath, hails from Saxon times. ‘Bolne’ means a ‘high place near marsh’. St Mary Magdalene’s church, a 12th century building famous for its eight bells, dominates the centre of the village. Bolney was originally constructed in two sections around the Common and the church. Developmnet linked the two parts together. There are listed buildings in the village, which was once famous for a cherry fruit fair. The local cricket club began playing in 1840.
