Arlington is a hospitable village by the River Cuckmere in Wealden District, East Sussex with the nearby village of Upper Dicker in the same parish. Inhabited in some form or other since the Anglo-Saxon era, the village church even has a window from the period and the original construction involved a number of Anglo-Saxon quoin stones. Proof of the antiquity is shown in the early naming of the place of worship, St Pancras. Pancras was a teenage Christian convert who was beheaded by the Romans around the year 304. The village today has some school facilities, a village hall and community activities. Nearby attractions include Michelham Priory, Upper Dicker, founded by the Augustinians in 1229. Arlington Reservoir, an award-winning nature site, provides water in the area as well as a splendid spot for fishing, and attracts twitchers with some 170 species nesting in the area, plus 10,000 migrating birds. Racing enthusiasts, meanwhile, enjoy Arlington Stadium's stock car track, which first opened in 1955. Eastbourne Eagles, the speedway team, are based there.
